The Blessed Lord said,
sri-bhagavan uvaca

With roots above and branches below,
urdhva-mulam adhah-sakham
the tree of existence is undecaying.
asvattham prahur avyayam
Vedic hymns are its leaves.
chandamsi yasya parnani
By knowing it, one knows the Vedas.
yas tam veda sa vedavit (15.1)
Con las raíces hacia arriba y las ramas hacia debajo,
el árbol de la existencia es imperecedero.
Los himnos védicos son sus hojas.
Conociendo esto, uno conoce los Vedas.
Its branches stretch above and below.
adhas cordhvam prasrtas tasya sakha
Its twigs are objects made of gunas.
guna-pravrddha visaya-pravalah
Its roots spread out below
adhas ca mulany anusantatani
in the world of action.
karmanubandhini manusya-loke (15.2)
Sus ramas se estiran para arriba y para abajo.
Sus ramitas son objetos hechos de gunas.
Sus raíces se expanden hacia abajo
